Would my car warranty still be valid if I ship my car abroad?

We recently caught up with guest blogger, Ella George, to discover if your car warranty would still be valid if you shipped your car abroad. This is what they said…

“People often have to take their cars abroad for a variety of reasons. The reasons can be personal or professionals but moving abroad pose one difficulty i.e. shipping your belongings.

You may have purchased a new car that you want to drive in the new country, but the question that arises here is, will your car warranty be valid if you ship it abroad?
The simplest answer to this question is no. Your manufacturer’s warranty will remain valid if you drive your car in the country where it was purchased.

For instance, if you have purchased your car in the United States and wish to relocate to the UK, then your manufacturer may not cover that warranty.
However, there’s a solution to that. You should consider buying extended car warranty which is sometimes also referred to as international car warranty.

The easiest way to go about it is to contact your manufacturer and find out about good extended car warranty providers so that you can cover all the damages/repair cost that may arise abroad.

Secondly, if there’s a remote chance that your car manufacturer may offer you international coverage it would be nothing less than a hassle to find authorized repair shops.

There are chances that you will get stuck somewhere and all you could do is to go to a private auto mechanic and pay out of your own pocket. Therefore, we recommend you to ensure that you get an extended car warranty if you are planning to move abroad and wish to take your car along.

The benefits of having an extended car warranty

For starters, you will be covered and you don’t have to pay out of your own pocket for a repair if you have been in an accident.

Moreover, extended car warranty also enables you to drive without any worry in the country of your choosing, because if your car breaks down somewhere you can simply connect with your extended car warranty provider and they will send you a rental car for you and tow truck for your car without asking you to pay extra.

The tow truck will then take your car to an authorised repair shop where it will be fixed and you can be on your way.

However, make sure that when you buy extended car warranty you don’t get any changes or alterations done from any unauthorised shop as it will void your warranty.
This rule also applies if you are driving within your home country as getting repairs done from any unauthorised shop will void any type of warranty that you may have.

What other situations would make your extended car warranty void?

Shipping your car and getting an extended car warranty is just one part of the picture. You also need to educate yourself on the situations where your extended car warranty becomes void.

Does crashing the car take away the warranty?

A crashed car can lose its warranty if it is not repaired within a specified period. Depending on the contract, if the driver does not fix the car within two months after the accident (or any other period specified in the contract), then you may lose your warranty.

Is it mandatory to have your car reviewed at the dealership?

Another issue is the dates of the reviews. Failure to take the car for overhaul within specified period of time as per your contract causes the consumer to lose extended car warranty.”
